개혁파들에게 있어 신학이란 하나님에 대한 지적 탐구에 그치지 않는다. 개혁파들에게 신학은 인간의 지, 정, 의를 포괄하는 전인격적인 만남이며 존재적 충돌이고 영적인 사건이다. 신학의 출발점이 인간의 이성이 아니라 자신을 계시하시는 사랑의 충만으로서의 창조주 하나님임을 신앙함에 일말의 타협도 허용하지 않기 때문이다. 개혁파 신학을 내세우지 않으면서도 신학을 포괄적이고 이해하기 쉽도록 풀어 쓴 조직신학 개론서가 출간되었다. 신학을 "하나님과 씨름하며 사랑함"에 유비하는  저자들은 모두 칼빈대학에서 교편을 잡고 고전과 종교사, 철학 신학을 가르치는 교수들이다. 

전체 세 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 1장에서는 신학 서론으로 신학의 역할과 배경 그리고 의미를,  2장에서는 신학의 제 주제들을, 그리고 3장에서는 각 시대별로 신학의 발전과정과 함의들을 탐구한다. 세 사람의 저자들이 함께 조직신학 개론서를 썼다는 것이 특이할 만한 점이며, 신학사를 함께 취급하여 신학서론, 신학주제들, 그리고 신학사를 간결하게 진술하고 묶었다는 점에서 Alister McGrath의 Christian Theology: An Introduction 과 상당히 유사하다. 조직신학을 가르치면서 잘 정리된 신학 입문서가 절실히 필요하다는 생각을 했는데 칼빈교수들에 의해 쓰여진 책이 출간되어 반갑고 기쁜 한 편, 한국 신학자들에 의해 쓰여진, 전통에 충실하고 현대적 상황에 적합한 조직신학 입문서에 대한 목마름이 더해진다.
